E46 316ti Compact

Hi

Bit of a problem with my E46 Compact.

Low coolant light appeared whilst on the motorway, i then topped the fluid up and continued home.

The next morning i checked the coolant level and found it to be full of engine oil!

Has anyone got any ideas? People i've spoke to suspect the oil cooler/heat exchanger.

Entirely different car, but many years ago I had the same thing happen with a MKII Scirocco 1.8i which had a water cooled oil cooler just above the oil filter

And yes what your being told was correct in my case

I certainly wouldnt drive it far if at all!

I've not used the car since for obvious reasons, will do a bit more digging!

Depends which engine M43 its going to be the headgasket,N42 its going to be the heat exchange(oil filter housing).
N42 the engine is covered by black plastic covers,oil filler cap unsrews but doesnt come off(2 part)
M43 the engine is visable,black inlet manifold and oil filler cap comes off(1 part)

Car has the N42 engine, does seem like the heat exchanger after speaking to a few people, thats a releif!
