535d extended warranty

Hello all.

About to buy privately an SE touring as the family wagon and car will be 3 in a week. New to model and for £861 am being offered a years extended warranty. Should I?

Tell you what why not put that £861 into an internet savings account and if anything fails in the year take the cost of it out of that £861 then 2nd year add another 861 to it repeat until the car is sold then you will have a nice pot of £ to maybe pay for the car in whole or a much higher deposit than currently.

Or Mortgage overpayments

I`d be tempted to. I have a 2 year old 535D Touring and have had the odd electrical glitch. I also get the collywobbles when I look at the complex plunbing under the bonnet.

They are a complicated car and I suspect they will need dealer care as they age - £861 seems reasonable for piece of mind.

Great family car though, particularly good on long journeys and I tend to think of it as a cross between a GT car and a van!

£900 for 1 year is a lot IMHO and if your that concerned then does that = the following year you will get another warranty? It would kind of indicate that as the older a car isd the more that will go wrong with it.

Then agzain why not buy it from a main dealer which comes with a 1 year warranty std it might be cheaper too!!?

plus you can opt to have the warranty work done at a dealers

Its that the BMW extend warranty and does it include roadside assistance/recovery?

If so I'd take it as its cheap for a car of that performance.

Check the exclusions on that there BMW warranty,

Oh and the excess...

Get a quote from one of the independent warranty companies like warranty direct and compare the levels of cover for the cost and decide what suits you...

But get a warranty...

My E39 530d auto sport cost BMW 18K in 11 months of warranty work - on a 3year old car.

If a turbo goes the cost will be between 2 and 6K (depending on whether it takes the cats or not with it).

You could put the money away - but what would happen if you got a large bill before
you'd banked the money. If you can swallow that go for it...

What about the following year? If the car is >100k miles then BMW will not cover it IIRC

Are 530d/535d's known for blowing turbos? If so is a remap a bit of a risk then?

Hold on a min here if you are that concerned about the TDI remember you are paying a lot more on the used market for a TDI over the 530i/540i equivalent and then you have to have this warranty it will take so many miles for you to negate the premium for the TDI that you may actually have sold the TDI before you reach that point.

Also the petrol straight 6 is pretty builtproof no turbo to worry about nothing total reliability and piece of mind it may do 10-15mpg less but £861 a year

Assume you travel 15k a year then the petrol will cost you circa£2350 the diesel (with the £861) will cost you £2487. and thats assuming you actually do achieve 15mpg higher in the diesel over the petrol.

It's probably not the best decision if I was just taking into account cost and risk, but it's it's mainly for wifey who will feel better with A BMW RAC man there if she wants!!! Peace of mind for me if there are any issues. I doubt I'd warranty it next year as by then I should have a better idea of potential issues to guage the cost implications of faults. I used the warranty cost to help bring down sale price, so it would almost be rude not to.

I've also got baggage coming off the back of a 996 engine rebuild after 2 months of ownership which, had I not bought a car with warranty, would have set me back about £13K.

What's the mileage?
On the E46 the suspension components are excluded from the extended warranty after 60k miles.

Get the Car RAC/AA inspected thats £100-200 pounds and in the above case youd have been covered for any failure.
