X5 Sat-Nav screen died

Does anybody have any suggestions on the following. The widescreen Sat nav unit in my friends X5 has gone blank but the sat nav voice etc still works as you can hear it. Does this sound like the screen has died or could there be a repairable fault?
If a new one is needed and one did not want to spend the £1k+ that BMW want for a new one fitted does anybody have any ideas fior specialists in this sort of thing.(West London)

I have seen a second hand unit on Ebay for £279 but have no idea of the labour cost associated with fitting the unit?

Any ideas?

The monitor is plug and play, should take no longer than 20 minutes to replace. Checkout the X5 World Forum as they've probably got a DIY procedure that your friend could follow.

Monitors rarely fail on these,Ive done about 3 in 8 years and only one of those was a failure-the others was pixel problems.

Carry out a battery reset as a start(disconect earth terminal and short to positive terminal-this removes all voltage spikes from control units)make sure there is no battery charger or phone,toy,road angel,tom tom plugged in when doing this.

or disconnect the video module which is located under the black plastic L shaped panel with BMW on it next to battery.wait for 2 mins and reconnect.

The 2 main causes of failure which I see is water ingress into the VM housing,so keep an eye out when working in the area,the other and is the most common of all and that is the Navigation unit.

If you drop the left hand luggage compartment down to gain access to the nav.Is the red LED lit?If not try and put your fingers on the connectors for the nav,or if you can remove the unit even better.Disconect and reconect the unit,also pull down on the connectors to see if it comes on-the power boards suffer with dry and cracked solder joints
