Just seen on A.T that a 127,000 miles 1 owner 535d with pronav and loads of options 2 years old is up for £16,999 what are the perils from buying such a high milage new car & ralative high price? How much longer would the car last?

Or similar cars which are near on £20k but have 100,000+ milage on them is it a depreciaon nightmare for the new buyer or a very shrewd buy

127k is hardly close to death. BMW diesel's can go on for twice that.

Buy it, drive it, keep it would be the advice. Make sure it has a full service history - as much as possible of that with BMW, check maintenance history, have it RAC inspected.

Good price, slight risk with turbos, but you pays your money...

Service History is a MUST, if the book is fully up to date go for it.

I have a 98,000 miler 535d MSport Touring that I've had from new (May 05). List below of things that have gone wrong :

Cigarette lighter doesn't always work (a common/batch fault apparently)
One screw holding in a front fog came loose
The hose for the rear wash/wipe came off the nozzle

In that 98,000 miles, apart from normal servicing / tyres, it had new discs / pads all round at about 85,000.

It currently needs some front bushes replacing (but I do live down an unusually bumpy track)

slightly OT but when my mini packed up bmw service came round. they were running 525d tourings and said the cars are kept for 30,000 miles which is done in 6mths. they then park them up for a few months and sell them pretty much as a 1 year old car, 30,000 miler. the reason they said is that it makes them easier to sell due to the lower average mileage.

my point is, if that is correct, £17k for a 2yr old 535d Sport with that mileage, would mean most of the depreciation would be down to mileage. say you do 15,000 miles per year for three years, the car will then be approx 170k after 5yrs, which would appear less "high mileage" for its age. you will still lose value but it might even itself out a bit smile

It's standard. I don't really need a re-map for the purpose for which I bought it.

Any ideas which ones are worn out? And what are the symptoms. Trying to track down an elusive front suspension clunk on my Nov 04 E61...

Not sure which ones (but will find out next week as I'm due a service) - will try to remember to post up then once a dealer has diagnosed. Symptons are steering wheel shake under braking (with new, properly bedded in pads / discs), general 'loose' feeling over poor surfaces and a bit clunky.

I'm hoping they'll do it under warranty but may be regarded as wear & tear.

Give me a prod if I forget.

Hi guys

I am currently musing over getting a used 535d M Sport as my next car.

With regards to servicing costs - are there any big services? What are they likely to cost? Are there any big expenses like cam belt changes etc.?

I am also thinking of having it remapped which (according to other posts on here) sounds like a great easy way to boost power. Is that likely to impact on reliability?

Many thanks

Mine's just been in for it's 1st MOT and look over by an indie before warranty expired - 113,000m

Undiagnosed by the indie but picked up the following day by the dealer was new inlet manifold replaced under warranty & new crank sensor. Apparently the baffles in the intake manifold break down over time.

Largest dealer service invoice to date was at 78666m. £365.19 + VAT.
This was Service - Std Scope, Oil Service, Fuel Filter Service, Service - Vehicle Check. Total labour £202.50, Parts (of which oil £92.40) £162.69.

Expecting a larger one soon as the Diesel particle filter is up for renewal next (but seems to be working fine according to smoke test result - or rather, lack of result,at MOT)

edit : to update (belatedly) earlier post - bushes were fine - it was all down to running cheap tyres on the fronts - now with Pilot Sport 2 all is back to normal

Just about all the E60/1 that are coming up to or over 3 years old are starting to feel tired in the suspension area, it is always the bushes. This is down to the run flat tyres, they do not absorb the poor roads properly.
Funnily enough 2 mates both with 05 plate 535d's, one a touring, that swapped the run flats straight away both have cars that feel as tight as a new one.

So if buying one that is a 55 plate or earlier get the bushes checked out or budget for getting them replaced, it makes such a difference to ride comfort, noise and handling and will stop premature wear on other parts too.

Thanks for that - it will probably be an 05 plate I am looking at.

What is the cost of new bushes?
