328 / 330 mpg?

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about buying either a 328 or 330 E46 coupe. My budget suggests they will be early 99 - 2001 models and I was wondering if anyone can give me any indication of the fuel consumption (in real terms!).

I currently own an A3 180 Quattro Turbo that will return approx 170-miles to £30 of fuel. The on-board computer states the car is doing 27.5 mpg. Incidentally he manufactures figures are somewhat different!


I love the A3, the toque and 4x4 make driving great fun, however I really miss my old E36 325 couple and that amazing noise from the engine!

My 99 328i saloon got 30-32 in real world use and up to 35 on the motorway at an average of 75-80. So not quite 400 miles from a 63 litre tank.

I have got a facelifted 2003 330ci sport and I get around 30mpg all the time. 400miles per tank normally. Can't complain with that.

98' E36 328i Sport here - 28mpg combined

there will be no noticable difference in fuel,but the 330 has a fair bit more bhp

All in all then the 3.0L BMW is better than my 1.8 Turbo Audi!
Is there much of a difference between the 328 and the 330?

My 2000 330CI gets mid to high 20s with mostly town driving and up to (a possibly optamistic) 34mpg on a long motorway run with cruise on.

The 328 has 192 BHP and ( I think) a normal throttle, the 330 has 231 bhp and a fly by wire throttle which has a slight lag in the lower gears. You may not really notice the electronics but some people find it really irratating.

So with 328's being a little cheaper perhaps that would be a better option?

My 328ci is averaging 29.4 mpg combined though I do mostly motorway driving but am fairly enthusiastic with the danger pedal.

I don't think there will be a noticable difference between the 328 and 330 mpg wise.

I had an A4 1.8TQ 180bhp years ago and then had a 330ci after it, the 330ci was by far the better car in terms of consumption, 30-35 on a run at 80mph and averaged around 28-30 all day long, great car

I've got a 2003 330ci sport with the six speed manual gearbox. Generally averages about 26-27mpg but the majority of my driving is in the rush hour unfortunately so I don't think that figures too bad!

Well my 2003 330Ci Clubsport normally does around 350 miles on about 55 litres of fuel so I think i'm averaging about 29mpg.

But I do a fair bit of motorway and when I don't i've seen it dip down to 27mpg
