Hi,i was thinking of fitting a 540 v8 to my 328 coupe, does anybody know if the gear box housing is the same or will i have to change the box as well?

The housing is different and you will need to change the box aswell.

I have worked on an Alpina V8 E36 so they do fit, but it is tight to do the clutch the whole subframe and engine have to be lowered


Do a search on here there is info on the Alpina type.

I was reading about this very subject in a magazine last month. I can't remember which one now. But it said that Alpina parts for the conversion were very expensive. But it did say you can adapt the engine mounts by cutting and welding the 540 bits onto the E36 ones. I seem to remember that you can use E36 M3 parts ie gearbox and propshaft onto an E34 540i engine. This conversion would be quite a challenge and not without problems, but great fun. I would look out for a 540 to use as a doner. preferably one of the rare manual 6 speed ones. That way you will have every thing you need.
