Remap outputs - is higher always better?

Hi all,

About to buy a 330D (184bhp) and am thinking of having a remap done straight away. Just wondering whether it's sensible to go for the highest output possible?

Superchips say they'll get up to 211bhp. Celtic Tuning offer a remap that goes up to 244bhp apparently - quite a difference. How can one company offer a greater increase than the other? By stressing the engine/turbo out completely?

The other interesting thing is: the Celtic remap gives a bit less torque than the Superchips, despite more BHP. I'm just confused now... which is better? (Mine's an auto - maybe more power less torque is better as the auto box tends to allow more revving?)

Just be careful as not all re-maps are going to applicable it depends on which version of the engine you've got as to what they can map it up to.. They might be referring to the maps offered for the later more powerful engines.

Good point, but it's definitely the right engine version - the 184bhp. (They also list the 204bhp and other variants, with even bigger post-remap outputs.)

I would be wary of someone claiming significantly high outputs that the rest of the competition. They're either fiddling the rolling road numbers (easily done) or doing something else (cranking up the boost, for example) that may not be sustainable over the long term. As usual, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
