335d/535d gearbox question

Is the torque converter used in 1st only, with full lock up from second onwards?

The torque converter lock up clutch is electronically controlled from a variable pulse width modulated signal that is operated using various factors such as : engine load , gearbox oil temp, vehicle speed, selected shift program and also it depends in what operating mode it is in.
It can be engaged in a forward gear from approx 80kmh (but not always)also under full load conditions from 20kmh but again this can change depending on all the above variables. It is not engaged below 35 deg c but other than that it can pretty much operate as required, in reality there are loads of different possibilities on when it can be operated.
One other situation when it is always uncoupled is when you are stopped with the foot on the brake, in this situation the A clutch is also disengaged to de couple the engine from the gearbox to minimise drag thus improving fuel economy.

I've been watching this topic, waiting for the answer.

So in simple terms, if the car is warm and I shove it into normal D or Sport mode and then plant it, I'll get full lock up? (once above 20kph).

Yep, the white one is my old car. I was having M3 cravings this morning as a pedalled my way into work rueing my lack of car!
