Fettling 330D

Hello all,

I've just bought a 330D, the 2001 model on a Y plate. 61k miles, just serviced, and in very good nick mechanically.

What I'm wondering is whether there are certain things one can or should do after purchase engine-wise to make sure it's tip-top? I'm thinking: EGR valve (cleaning thereof); injectors (again, cleaning); air filter... and so on.

If anyone is inclined to help, I'd like to know:

a) what should be done (including but not limited to jobs listed above),
b) how to do it, and
c) whether I should attempt myself or give to dealer/indy specialist/indy/kwikfit?

The car had its first 3 services with BMW, next couple with BMW specialists then just had an inspection 1 with the independent I bought it from.

There is one thing that must be done. A modification to the inlet which prevents a swirl flap of somesort breaking off eating your turbo and a few pistons also. I forget what it is but its an accident waiting to happen.

inlet manifold vanes pick up crud and eventually break up, throwing stuff into the cylinders and leading to you crying quite a lot.

find a local indy and next time it's in for something, mention the prob and see if you can negotiate said item opening up and cleaning out. They'll charge, but I had mine done when 2 injectors went (£700) and it made sense.

Mine ('02 89k) is doing fine, but has had various electrical bits fail as one might expect, nothing expensive. Bit tedious when a broken £5 relay kills you dead on the drive, and is tricky to trace, but easy on the wallet.
