Aye, 38 bhp and 72 lbs-ft up on the 335d, but i reckon the V8 layout will prove to be an even better engine than the already-brilliant 335d!
The engine has 400 lbs-ft from 1750 rpm, apparently!!!
Yes, a DMS tweak might well see 400 bhp and 575 lbs-ft.
Now that WOULD make for a quick 3-series!

Can anyone shed any light as to what the power & torque at idle are for the following BMW's (all current models):-
318d
320d
325d
330d
335d
and the forthcoming
340d (or 540d).
Also peak torque & peak power would be good & finally the idea being that we can then state that at idle this car produces x% of its peak torque - this clearly will show up the single turbo models but highlight that even though they rev to around 4-4.5k if torque doesnt really arrive until around 2k then the usable rev range is short but f its say 70% of peak at idle then thats a whopping 4-4.5k rev range!

In the shorter term I am waiting on the 123d 204bhp unit going into the 3 coupe/convertible. For those of us on a budget that will be a golden combination.
Anybody know anything?
I'd imagine it will happen with the 3 series face lift scheduled for late this year. Interestingly that new unit is putting out as much BHP as quite recent versions of the 3.0d engine.Anybody know anything?
I had a 535d and now have an x5. I might go back to a 5 series (probably when the new e60 replacement happens in 09/10) but it will be the 523d (i'm assuming it happens) that i will be looking for. That engines combo of power & economy will be so hard to walk past.
Though these monster oil burners will be savage mile crushers, I don't imagine they will sell by the bucket load.
That engine will appeal to some who don't want to go the full hog to an M3 and obviously want some scope to get a 3rd party to chip it to something silly, whilst saving on insurance and having a stealth machine.
As already pointed out though, the new units are already causing a stir, as the 123d puts out as much as a 3.0d, so it is risking pushing the line up of engines up a gear. The existing 177bhp unit will be redundant, and the petrols are kinda pointless below 3 litre. The 170 unit is gutless and old dears will be overtaking you in their Yaris's and Fabia's. The X25 unit is okay in the one series, but in the 3 upwards weight takes over. Should this mean that we should expect power hikes in the other diesel units too?
To me it suggests that BMW would be better focusing the line up on good diesels and higher end petrols as demand is really going to drop off for the lesser petrols unless some serious re-invention goes on.
Mercedes ought to watch out too, as they are already way behind.

Where's this info come from? Reliable source? Seems odd considering all the other BMW diesels have lots of variants.
E.G.
318d/320d/123d = same block/head
325d/330d/335d = same block/head
(please correct if I'm wrong)
The 4.4 litre diesel V8 is already available in the 745d in Europe with 330BHP and 750Nm. The earlier V8 was 4.0 litre but had a cast iron block. Rumour has it that a 5.0 litre diesel is under development.E.G.
318d/320d/123d = same block/head
325d/330d/335d = same block/head

Suppose i will have to chop in the 335d for a 340d, altho the name does not sound as sporty.
I thought it was your dad's car Carlos

Mooted to arrive in 2009, with a V8 4.0, producing 320 bhp and 500 lbs-ft.
This sounds good.
Only 320bhp?This sounds good.
You get more than 320bhp with a remap on a 335D.
