320d Lot of smoke after tickover.

After car has been ticking over for a couple of minutes and i set off there is a lot of grey smoke,this carries on until i am able to open it up then it clears.Have only had car a short while and never noticed this before.I can drive around at low revs with no sign of any smoke(only happens at tickover).The car has covered 79,000mls with F S H,any body any ideas? Thanks.

If diesels are left at tickover for about 10 mins, next time you put the throttle down they leave a lot of smoke. I used to get a black line on the concrete about 30 feet long.
If it doesnt do it during normal driving, only after being left stationaly I would suggest that was fine. I think it is a carbon build up...could be wrong.

If it's grey smoke it sounds like condensation. My 120d does thia at the moment while it's cold. Goes when it's warmed up a bit.

Replace the crankcase breather,they are servicable at 60000 miles but most are missed.
It sits on top of the engine under the plastic covers between airfilter housing and injectors 3 + 4

Thanks a lot Chris,but the smoke is there when hot as well as cold,cheers mate. Stu,the cranckase breather sounds good ,is it possible to clean or should i just buy and fit. Many thanks.

If its as cheap as it was on my M5 - about 7 quid, Id just replace it.

Sadly I wouldn't have a clue where to find it on your car, start withthe engine section :-)

Its a replace only,made of a material similar to a tampon....thats the only thing I could think of that it was like sorry!

On my car they seem to have changed the design to a much more robust tube. Presumably the heat causes its strength to deterioate, now it is weaved with a thin 'criss crossed' wire.

hello, i have a mate with a 03 plate that was doing the same thing and he ended putting both a recon turbo and fuel pump on to sort it out.
