SWMBO has an '04 Z4 with the Prof Sat Nav - is it possible to update it to a more recent version? It doesn't currently do postcode address entry, which is annoying, but I think later versions do.

Can anyone tell me how you go about this?

Cheers

Go to your nearest dealer or get on Ebay, and pick up the latest nav DVD, BMW High Europe 2008-1. Got mine from ebay.de for €160, think it is around €300 from a dealer.

You can update the disc, for the latest ones. Although BMW Sat-Nav do not work with postcodes.

BMW's nav do work with postcodes.

OEM BMW DVD discs have (both 2008-1 HIGH and 2008-1 PRO) have Postcode search albeit 5 digit, and there is a modded one that will do full postcode as a poi, see ebay.

In fact all DVD discs from 2006-1 had Postcode search, so 2006-1, 2007-1, 2007-2 and 2008-1 have it.

So to answer the OP, Just update to the latest (2008-1 HIGH) and you get postcode as well as TMC.

I'm afraid you also have to update the OS as well. All this can be found on the Internet. X5 world in particular have an excellent guide for the Mark iv DVD sat nav system. Set aside a sunday afternoon and you'll be fine. Once you get perspective view and postcode search you'll see that the intergrated sat nave is a lot better than tom tom et al.

But it should be a lot better, it is 10x the price...

Of course, and I did nearly buy it just for the fact that it makes other stuff on the car easier to use.
I really hope that there will be an option at some point to have an integrated comms system in the car that has a screen, handles bluetooth, music etc, etc Which we can then plug the sat nav of our choice into, so have a tomtom rom or whatever.....

So if i have a DVD based system, this is possible.???
Ive currently got a mk3 CD based unit [ 02 plate 330i], but am looking to upgrade to the DVD type...
The "non postcode" thing is a real pain...

What's the difference between the 2008-1 HIGH and 2008-1 PRO dvds? Say, if you had Navigation PRO in an E60, is one a more correct choice than another?

I have a late 04 3 series that I updated with a CD bought from a chap on here for £30. Have Perspective (you have to unlock this feature), TMC and Postcode search and didn't have to touch the OS at all.

Took a couple of minutes in total including unlocking perspective view etc.

If you have the pro nav you must use the pro DVD.

I'll see if I cam make this a bit clearer.

All BMW MK3 and MK4 SatNav systems can read a map disc that is Postcode complaint, this is true for both PRO and HIGH map discs.

Pre 2006 OEM Map discs do not have PCS.

Any version of the OS after the initial v20 (mk4) is also capable of running PCS (Postcode Search) and TMC.

MK4 versions after V27 could have 3d Perspective mode.

PCS (Postcode Search) is a function of the map disc not the OS.

The reason BMW do not supply a full PCS is that they (BMW) do not want to pay for the full PCS license and not that it won't fit on the disc, it does, I have it on mine.

The difference between the HIGH and PRO is the HIGH is for I-bus equipped cars with a MK1,MK2,MK3 and MK4 nav computer, the PRO disc is for MOST I-Drive equipped cars.

BMW stupidly call the 16:9 MK3/MK4 (HIGH) system in the e46/e39 etc the Professional Navigation System, this confuses lots of people into thinking they need the PRO map disc, you don't, you need the HIGH (as it uses a MK4 Nav computer, not the MOST I-Drive Nav computer).

You can run a MK1, MK2, MK3 CD on the MK4's DVD Drive, It will work and is basically a cut down version of the DVD.

HTH.

I have an E46 with the HIGH MkIV Sat nav, updated to run the v29.1 OS (v31 is out but I understand makes no real changes). I have a copy of the latest 2008-1 map and all is running well with the perspective mode turned on.

So I thought I was getting to grips with the Sat Nav system.

However all this talk of FULL postcode searches confuses me. If I have this right all I need is a Map that supports the postcodes, and the OS is irrelevant. If this is correct then where do you source a map with the postcodes, or is there a way to modify an existing map disc. I have searched all the usual places (wink wink) but cannot find them. I know we are not allowed to post dodgy links so if anyone knows, or can give me a hint where to look then could they PM me?

Any help appreciated!

Other than recoding the unit to allow the reading of dual layer map discs (from 2008-2 all will be D/L), not to many changes, although it does feel a bit quicker.

I'd update if you want to use the next genaraton of map discs.

Correct, you must have the correct map disc to access the postcode search (OEM 5 digit).

Dealer or ebay.

Yes and no,

Yes;
you can mod the map disc to have the 7 digit postcode search and access it as POI

No;
you can't modify the OEM PSC and access it via the town/city way.

You may find a 2008-1 map disc but probably not with the 7 digit PCS.

Like I said not sure if one is available. (then again not looked).

I was an internet find, but i can't remember where it was now, sorry.

They usually trot out the "it won't fit on the map disc sir" well thats crap, it does and with the map discs going to Dual layer then they will have plenty of room, no?

How much do Mk4 DVD drives usually go for 2nd hand?

Do breakers usually sell them for a reasonable price or Fleabay the best bet?

I picked one up on e bay for £300. The people in Lithuania who do these seem to be reliable. I got a wide screen and a drive - they both work well.

If you have the DVD MK IV system, and a "full 7 digit postcode" DVD, then it will do full postcode search - but you need the "instructions" on how to do it, as you don't enter the postcode in the same way as previously.

If you PM me, i'll mail them to you
