No, I'm buying privately and considering getting an inspection. Years ago you could lift the bonnet, blip the throttle and have a look yourself. Not now I guess, so much to look at and all so complex.
Has anyone had an RAC / AA inspection done on a private sale? Worthwhile? Is there any comeback if they miss something critical?
More interestingly, is there a specialist BMW garage near beds that will do an inspection?

A few years ago I was selling my 323i coupe. A guy that was going to buy it had an AA Inspection carried out which identified a possible leaking head gasket and "too much play" in part of the front suspension.
The car had only been serviced by BMW a few thousand miles before so I took it straight back to the dealership and they got it up on the ramp and told me there was nothing wrong with the active suspension - the part was moving in that way as that was how it was designed! They also advised that they could only confirm if the head gasket was leaking by carrying out a compression test, but it "did not look like" it was leaking.
Not surprisingly the guy didn't buy the car and at that stage the car had 75,000 on the clock. I eventually ended up keeping the car and sold it with 115,000 on the clock - the head gasket never gave me a single problem and neither did the suspension part picked up in the AA Inspection. Needless to say I was less than impressed with the AA for costing me a sale and the dealership also told me that they had had similar issues with other owners as the AA/RAC etc. do not have the detailed knowledge that someone who works on the cars day in, day out would have.
