2003 320TD E46...Wont start.
Discussion
Hi Guys.
Need some advice:
The vehicle above intitally would not start when warm.
A while back I had all the symptons of a ring failing,(pressure in sump, blue smoke, oil out of dipstick tube the works....It turned out to be the oil breather unit next to the air filter.
A couple of months later, car started fine when cold, but cranks and does not start when warm??
Have fitted a new fuel filter (was due anyway)..Had the SNAP on Diag tool on which advised 'low pressure at the rail'.2 bar before starting then climbs slowly,if it gets to 90 bar it fires. When running has over 900 bar.It has started a few times and runs with no problems when it does.
Injectors are fine, pressure sensor and regulator on either end of the rail are fine.Had the pipe off the electric pump under the seat ad that is fine to.
Williams Teccie suggests the pre supply pump is a fair bet.
One thing im concerned about is with the breather making oil go back through the inlet manifold, could this have caused any residual damage?
Anyone come across this or can offer definative advice?
Cheers.
Mike.

Its going to be one of 2 things;
Excessive run off from the injectors. They will still fire if the pressure reaches firing point. The slow climb to 90 bar would suggest checking them.
Low pre supply pressure - should have a constant 4 bar engine side of the in line pump.
As for residual damage, very unlikely. If oil passes to the cylinder it will destoy the engine.oil doesnt compress. You must ensure the manifold hasnt got any puddles in it,only way to prove that is removal and tip it up.If you take off the egr valve(metal body attached to manifold-turbo intercooler pipe fitted)you can see inside to get an idea of how much is in there. There will always be some.
But for the non start I would aim at the injectors, one will have a high leak off.......We see loads of them.

CROWLANDC..Thanks for the link
FORZA.
Thanks for the heads up..We did initially think it was the injectors, fitted some others and found only a fine mist coming from the run off pipe (advised this is ok, if an injector was down fuel would pour out of there.
Its looking more like the pre supply pump, definatly only getting 2 bar....i'll have a nosey .
Really appreciate the advice.
