New 625bhp M1 On The Way?

It’s almost Easter and what better time to crank up the rumour mill and bring you some good old fashioned speculation.

This time we are being told that BMW is serious about a successor to the M1 supercar and we can expect to see it in 2012.

According to reports the car is now in development and will feature a carbon fibre chassis plus carbon-ceramic brakes, forged magnesium wheels, Kevlar bucket seats and a carbon fibre bodykit.

It seems like BMW may be feeling a bit overshadowed by cars such as the R8, Mercedes SL Black Series and the McLaren SLR, all coming from its main competitors.

Now the boys over in Bavaria want revenge and are preparing to wedge in an all-new V10 with twin-turbochargers and an ECU developed by BMW’s F1 team.

Expect around 625bhp which could push the ultralight supercar to way over 200mph.

An entry-level twin-turbo V8 version could cost around £90,000 but the V10 monster will likely set you back £250,000.

It needs to be a mid-engined baby to earn the M1-reference . . . IMO.

Lambo was involved back in the days. OMG the M1 was a stunner, have one for big money these days. With just the 635i M-sixpot in it was a bit of an underdog.

Good luck to Beemer but I'd like to see the 8-series sucessor.

i thought that, i guess they will do some chassis work perhaps on the bigger engined one? but still, i want one!!! about time BMW made a supercar, i mean, the m6/m5 cars are bloody quick, but the m6 is more of a gt cruiser, and the m5 is a saloon, a super car would be nice!

Well if a lardarse delimited M5 with a mere 500bhp can scrape over 200mph then I would think it's a safe bet to assume something like that with 625bhp would easily top 200mph.

I honestly thought this would be about a souped up 1-series. Now that I'd pay for.

However the real M1 was a stunner stylistically, and possibly fun to drive, allbeit slow. Hopefully the new one has a proper manual.

VXR8 looks truly superb (seen a few on road now, oodles of prescence) but in std trim, they struggle to match the poise of the //Ms but hey, slight moolah diff!

same here, could you imagine a 600 bhp + 1 series... madness of the best possible order!

as for the M1, will wait and see what happens, could be an interesting car though if it goes through and does have all the weight reducing schemes put into action.
