I drove a friend's 320d M Sport Touring yesterday and was very impressed. It is about one year old so I believe it to be 163bhp, in which case the new model should be even better. The only fault I found was a tendency for the steering to be affected by irregularities in the road surface which I think could be attributed to the sport specification. I am seriously considering ordering a new 320d in either SE or Sport spec and wonder if any other members have comments to make regarding the relative merits. I would also appreciate any information regarding achievable discounts and the possibility of impending facelift and/or the introduction of the engine from the 123d. If I ordered an SE I would probably spec sports seats and steering wheel.

There are literally hundreds of used ones in the network. I have been keeping an eye on 330d's and the prices seem to be dropping pretty quickly. You can get 56 plate and even some 07 cars for £10-£13k less than the new price. Often with mileage less than 10k miles.

I will look at used ones but would like to know what I could get a new one for to compare. I would like to choose my specification and colour, but would consider used if a good saving. Previous experience has shown that after a good discount the used look less attractive.

I always use www.broadspeed.com as a reference point. They are a web 'front' for the InchCape group of car dealers, so if you express an interest it will be the actual dealer who rings you not someone from the website. You should be able to get between 8 & 10%.
If nothing else, use broadspeed as a bargaining chip with your local dealers.
Its also worth remembering there have been significant changes in the 3 series & 5 series ranges in a year. Efficient dynamics models were introduced and the 5 series got those refinements plus some tweaks in the 'LCI' facelift at the end of march. The power went up on the 320d to 177BHP and the full range got ED tweaks. So whilst saving say £10,000 off full list price off a jan 07 car might seem compelling, when you factor in that
(a) its probably a pre 'efficient dynamics' model, with higher tax and fuel consumption (getting more and more important)
(b) you can get maybe £4000+ off the car new
(c) it may well have extras on it you dont want - i looked at a year old 535d before i bought my new one and it looked good value compared to its new price, but there was stuff on it i wouldnt have wanted or paid for otherwise.
(d) The car is over a year old, so has eaten in to a fair bit of its warranty.
(e) it will be worth less when you drive it three years, ie, you're buying a one year old car, and later will be selling a four year old car, as opposed to buying a new car and selling a 3 yo car later.
Not saying its not worth looking at, its just that it may not be as clear cut as a £10,000 saving headline might suggest.
