Z4 - 2.5i

Hi there,

Noticed that Z4 prices are coming down to a reasonable level. I would like a 3.0 with the 6 speed box but these still go for reasonable money. What is the 2.5 like? Would be looking at an early car (2003/2004).

It's horses for courses really. When i was looking for a Z4, i was initally being told 'get the 3litre' and so convinced myself that is what i required. However, i had just come from 4 years of owning a TVr Cerber 4.5, so it wasn't really high end performance i was after anymore. It is down to your preferences really. Ask yourself a few questions and consider the stats - is the difference in performance such an issue for you? How will you use it, and will that 1 second difference 0-60 or that 8mph top speed difference really matter?

I plumped for a 2.5 in the end for a number of reasons in addition to the questions above which i constantly asked myself. Slightly cheaper insurance, slightly better fuel consumption, slightly cheaper prices, will be used as an everyday car, cheaper than the 3litre etc - all for pretty much the same car save a 3 litre badge and slightly higher performance. Plus the perfect model came along with the obligatory (IMHO) 18' ellipsoid alloys which i just could not resist.

doesn't the 3.0 litre come with a stack of extra kit over that on the 2.5 too? Does that not go some way to bridging the cost difference?

As has been said the 3.0i is a little bit more gutsy and has a lsihgtly better induction noise than the 2.5i. However, others are right to point out the performance is negligable and there are some small savings to be made going for the 2.5i. You wouldn't be dissapointed with the 2.5i. Make sure you get either the Ellipsoids or the Star Spoke (5 spoke) split rims, both 18".
