USB connection woes

I've had this problem with 4GB USB stick and also a 60GB LaCie USB drive. When playing a track, the car will get half way through and skip on to the next track. This doesn't happen on the same place in every track, it appears to be random.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I;ve run two different usb sticks on it, a 2gb and 16gb, both cheapo no brand jobbies (from ebuyer I seem to recall). I did try a hard drive but it would not read it properly.
Can you try a different stick?

This happens with a 4GB USB stick and a 60GB hard drive. They both get up and running, but one in every 10-20 songs will prematurely end.

are you listening to them completely, one after another in order, or do you skip about and miss ones you don't like?

I don't think I have ever listed to 10 in a row, although your email prompted me to sort out some playlists so maybe later in the week.

I listen to the whole lot on random, and I skip tracks reasonably often. Maybe one in every three?

I am wondering how to approach the problem with BMW if I can't find a resolution online.

Try a few other sticks first, are the tracks all standard mp3, what bitrate are they? Is there a common factor to the ones that skip?

From what I remember they don't support hard drives so don't even mention it.

It could be that you are listening to something terrible and the car has decided it won't play them on the grounds of taste

It has happened at different points in the same track, so it's not a problem that's easy to reproduce.

The iPod is a hard drive, and that's supported! I'm using a 60GB LaCie little disk which has v. low power usage:

I had a 2.5" drive that didn't work due to power usage.

Jeez, is this really a thread on a car forum?

Dump the i-drives and bring back CD's.

Take the car into a dealer and tell them it doesn't do what its supposed to do and see if they can fix it! Just watch their faces.
