BMW 530d - Swirl Flaps inside Manifold

I own a 530d se 53 re about 70,000 miles.
Bought from origional owner 12months ago, but no extended warranty.
Marvelous car, awsome acceleration, 36.5 mpg from new.
Full BMW Service
On Easter Sat the Swirl Flaps dropped into the manifold and my local dealership has diognosed a NEW engine required at a cost of £ 12,500.
They have applied to Customer Service for a "Good will" grant.
Are you able to advise if this has happened on other cars, and how much help am I likely to get from BMW. The trade valure of the car is £ 13,000.00

Bad luck but its a common problem on this engine.

However their offer of £13k for a new engine is nonsensical as youd simply scrap yours and buy a different one if that were the worst case end scenario.

Contrary to the previous posters comments, it's not a common problem. It is an issue for some unlucky owners, but I'd wager that the problem has affected a very very small proportion of 3.0d units. I did have the same thing happen to me back in 2004 and it resulted in a piston, new head, 24 valves and lots of BMW labour, all covered under warranty.

I did have the same thing happen to me back in 2004 and it resulted in a piston, new head, 24 valves and lots of BMW labour, all covered under warranty.

A friend has a 2004 330d when his car went in for it's first service 15kish the inlet manifold was changed as a BMW warranty item, no official recall though.

So all the owners are imagining it ?This and turbo failure are the most frequent problems on BMW diesels.
I wonder just how common this problem is? BMW make more 2.0 litre diesel engines than any other in their current range and we hear on the forums of how many failures, a hundred? Percentage wise, out of a production of around a million units that's not significant (statistically). The problem was highlighted on the earlier 136BHP engine and measures to improve the situation introduced. The problem also seems effect lesser numbers of the six cylinder diesel models.
Now we all probably know someone who has been effected by this issue but you always hear of the problems and not from the other 99.99% who have not been effected.
BTW I've had five BMW diesels and been lucky I guess or is it just down to those percentages?

Chris, i know what you mean mate but i would imagine that bmw would be over the moon if 100 out of
a million had these problems,i think it will be considerably more but if it was 1000 that is still
pretty good odds i suppose, mine is a 320d (2003)and i might go for the flap extraction simply
because of the catastrophic damage that MAY happen!!

BMW updated the swirl flaps in 2005. I dont know if its cured but take a look on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/ to see if you have the old or new one.
