Can't find general prices for these.
What's a good used one worth, say 2 years old?

The B5 was around £63k new, and with some options added could get to £70k, so a 2 year old car with 25,000 miles should be around £37-40k depending on spec. (as indicated by the Autotrader adverts).

I can heartily recommend the car - I've run one for 2 years and loved it. It is hilariously rapid in a straight line, the engine is a jewel and it handles respectably. It is a very different car from the M5 - it is feels big and heavy and does not handle so sportily - but the ride comfort is excellent and it deals with my regular trip to the Nurburgring with aplomb.

Second hand, I think they are something of a bargain.

Kind regards

Steve

There was a black one advertised on PH for £36.5k recently, only 19,000 miles, looked gorgeous.

Seems good value compared to an M5 don't you think? I know which I'd rather have.

Am I right in saying there is a B5 and a new B5 S?

Yes. The B5 S has just been launched. There's a review in a recent Autocar. An extra 30 hp (not that it needed it!) and apparently tuned suspension.

Kind regards

My car arrived about five months ago; it arrived purely by chance as I swapped my 996 turbo for it with DeR of this website and I absolutely totally and completely love the car. Its one of those cars I always liked the look of but would never really have gone out and bought but in all probability it will be the first of several Alpina’s in the coming years.

Ignore what Autocar say about the handling of the original car as frankly who really wants to go power sliding their everyday run about? This may sound fractionally conceited but I would be very surprised if a B5 owner didn’t have something else in the garage for that type if thing anyway.

Last week I took the car to Essen for the Techno Classica and it averaged over 25 mpg and whilst in Germany was pulling like an absolute train at over 170 and would have easily broken the 190 barrier in absolute comfort

Handling can be improved by fitted a Quaif dif, birds garage will charge about £1500 and don’t worry too much about quoted power figures, they are the minimum amount, my own car saw a little over 530 bhp at the engine whilst on a dyno test

Money, a dealer would charge £40k or so for a twenty thousand mile car but with the arrival of the B5S.

They are fantastic, go and get one, you won’t regret it but one closing thought, if ever you worry about the old ‘BMW’ badge thing the response to the Alpina couldn’t be more different. Its one of those cars that got well mentioned in a ‘I know about cars’ thread on this website, its amazing how many people who like their motors seem to appreciate the Alpina for what it is, the choice of those who are in the know.

All I know is that one night, on a very, very empty 'highway,' somewhere, a speed scrotum scratchingly close to the double ton came up.

The car was piledriving up a long, long incline and the only reason for not smashing the speedgrail was the driver being ordered to lift off.

They are mesmerisingly superb and if I had to have just one car this might well be it.

I'm sure the S variant squeezes the automotive lemon pips for that extra dribble of venom but the car I now properly lust after is the E66 B7.

Even if they resist S upgrades and even though it will sacrifice a tenth or two to the B5 and several mph at the top end, it has to be the ultimate Alpina.

Rob, you are it's perfect custodian. Hail to thee, Squire. beer

Now there’s a funny thing, an economics student with a passion for old motors and proper Beemers! Look what happened to this one, many thanks though.

Afternoon Lord Bolton, I saw the 996 over at Fearnsport when I dropped the new CSL of on Tuesday, poor old girl was left outside, still a pleasing result at Vmax?

What about the B6 Sytners currently have in stock? Vario-rob Senior was muttering about going to have a look if its still there as compared to his Gransport its positively frugal, faster, more scarce, better made, more comfy and better at pretty much everything imaginable.

How many B7’s of the current shape have come over, there are more Harrison watches in the country I would think? Good call though.

The B5S does come in some interesting colours, what about the dark metallic green or Arab Racing White?

In all honesty it will do a lot more than scare anything less than a 612 in a straight line fight.

A few weeks I went to the Techno Classica in Essen and open the taps on the autobahn and the rate at which the car was pulling at over 170 was nothing short of awesome, a truly fantastic car.

My only beef with my B5 is Autocars harping on about them not being very good at drifting unlike the M5, pray tell what would anybody who wanted a car like this need to go drifting?

I have to say, I miss the old bird like buggery.

Whilst the Pork Imperative was unavoidable the B5 proposition for real world performance hackery was/is hugely compelling.

Sure, it doesn't 'handle,' as such but it puts it up the commies like a good 'un.

I bet the new car is nothing less than hilarious because Buchloe broncos are bigger than conventional nags so 530BHP (where B = Bovenseipenic) is more likely 570, 580 in normal terms.

At 1700kg it's in a featherweight class of it's own next to it's trad opposition...

Ian Gillan once sang "95 - barely cruising;" here, we adapt the lyric by the insertion of a one before the neun.

Sensible policies for a nimby free Britain.

Johan Von Chester,

The temptation to tighten ‘land of leather’s’ stern remains however there is a certain charm in knowing one rear tyre is getting worn out quicker than the other!

Somehow it takes you back to the good old days of wild oversteer, a hopelessly spinning inside wheel and the ability to have 500 brakes worth of uber saloon behaving like a 2.8 Capri in everyway imaginable apart from the Wolfrace wheels.

Mind you the cost of a couple of rears would pay for most of the Quaif I seem to recall

My Lord Bolton,

If like me you have ventured to the configurator on the Alpina website you will have come across the new colour options available on the B5S, how hard is that Alpina dark metallic green going to be to resist, it was launched in it if I recall correctly?

Dip further and deeper into the options list and irrespective of the financial holocaust you’ll suffer having one ordered it is truly the stuff of Pavlov.

530 conservative Alpina horses, handling that is less Gerry Marshall, the comfort of knowing that those who know, know. The temptation, oh the temptation…….

For what its worth I am going to have the big brute heaved onto a rolling road in May and I will be fascinated to see what it is actually putting out, as you say their power quotes seem conservative

Toby,

Mine was acquired as part of a swap deal with Derestrictor (Lord Bolton) having first had the bait of one of these fine beats waved under my nose by the other poster in the thread 993 RSR. Blimey it all sounds incestuous but there again I am from East Anglia.

In answer to your question it’s hard to tell but he took my 996 Turbo X50 and I had his B5 and we both went home happy chaps, you can drop me a private email if you’d like to know more.

Spec wise it’s hard to tell with only 50 having made it to the UK but certainly the comfort seats are fantastic, the dark blue on my car looks the part, the Alpina wood is a nice touch but apart from that I think it would be hard to find one that didn’t look special.

Mind you personally I’d avoid silver as it looks too much like every other E60 on the road but the fact remains I have had loads of interest in the B5 from people who seem to know and appreciate their cars which is a real bonus, I’m not so sure the same would apply to certain M cars

Probably best to stick to how you normally articulate your emotions.

Really.smile

Otherwise, it's pretty embarrassing

Funny - you always tend to get this around Der. It's flattering for him I'm sure but never reads right. This sites only big enough for one impenetrably verbose pseudo kraut king.
