740i advice

My neighbour is looking for a 97ish 740i for less than £3000. What are the nikisil issues and do they suffer heed gasket failure?

Nikasil M60 engine (4.0). Alusil M62 engine (4.4). I wouldn't worry either way as high sulphur petrol is no longer available.

Head gaskets only really a problem if it has overheated.

A '97 E38 will have the Alusil M62 engine so safe on that count.

I believe that the 94+ 7 series were pretty reliable and suffered no nasty problems such as the one raised.

I wanted a 740i before I turned to the dark side and decided to get a 540i Manual instead, lol

i have a '97 740. i'm not saying it would be in the under 3000 mark, but is an absolute beauty. i have had it for about 18 months and have looked after it as well as i can. it has given me nothing, but reliable,enjoyable journeys in up-most comfort.
go get one!
