E36 318i 1996 - Intermittent power loss

My friend is having dramas.

Once his 318 is up to working temperature occasionally it has a 2-3 second lapse of power, the car feels and sounds like it is only firing on 3 cyls for that time then back to 4. Air mass meter has been changed and a BMW specialist changed a sensor in the inlet manifold. This has made no difference whatsoever, any ideas will be most appreciated!

Is this when driving along? I assume quite high mileage considering it's age. I've heard about sludge in the fuel tank being sucked up and blocking the intake of fuel at a certain speed & revs >60mph iirc.
