6 Series questions

Morning all,

I notice that values of the current 6 series are coming down to reasonable levels. Still too much for me but within the next year they should fall to the point of being affordable. The thought of a large 2+2 coupe with a V8 under the bonnet and hooked up to a 6 speed manual transmission appeals. I always wanted a Porsche 928 but they are getting on a bit now and the 6 series is similar is concept but a more modern vehicle.

What is the general consensus on the 6 series?
Are they reliable?
Do they handle well?
What are the servicing costs like?
How does the performance compare to the Jaguar XKR, Merc SL, etc?
How much is the BMW warranty and how old can the vehicle be before the warranty cannot be renewed?

Whilst the 6-series doesn't look as good as the 928 (particularly the GTS) it ticks a lot of boxes for a big coupe.

I think its a very well built comfy cruiser.

It will handle well but aint no racecar. It aint the prettiest thing i dont think but certainly has some major presence.


Servicing will be similar to any non M/// BMW. Shop around at different dealers, i have found big price variables between local Dealerships. Unless you want to go independant.

Go test drive a few, im sure you will want one even more after!

Someone in the showroom said to me it looked like it's got Downsyndrome

The 6 is quite a wide car with big fat tyres so it does hold the road well, so long as the road is in a relativly good condition or it can jump about a bit if your hammering it.

If you do go for the 645 then the costs will like has been said be similar to that of M3's. Manufacturer warranty lasts for 3 years. If the car is from a dealership then you will get 12 months MOT & unlimited mileage warranty no matter how old the car is. I'm sure the warranty can be renewed once the 12 months dealer warranty is up.

I sold my Dad a 6 Series Convertible and he loves it, not had any mechanical problems.

If you own your own filling station anyway It's a lot of car for the money though, no question.

I now own the latest 635D Sport and it's a great car and handles very well, I owned two 928 GTS's and they are on a par with the 635DS 0-60 wise, but the bmw will out power them on the move.
I V8 645/650 is about as quick as the 928 also and will handle very close to it, FSH on any BMW is a must, if buying from a main dealership, it will come with 1 years waranty.
Servicing is flexable and only certain items come up at diferent times, IE: engine oil, or brake service required, all are shown in the IDrive menu and when these things are due, so just flick through before you buy it.

I agree, my 18 mpg is town driving, mixed is a 'real' 23-25 mpg.
and that's a 5.7 V12
