E39 530D drivers...what MPG do you get? Seriously...

Hello peeps

As it says....what do you get? What do you really get?

I have a 540 and i've heard various bullst but i really get 17 around town and 30 at 80mph on a run. At 90mph it does 27. At 100mph it does 25. Ahem.

I have averaged 21mpg over the 5000 miles i have done since i got it.

So...what say you?

If you got 17 in the 540i I would expect you to get around 29mpg in the 530d if an auto.

I got 25.9mpg in my 535d which was exactly the same as I got from the 530i petrol.

I get 29-30 mpg comuting from my 540i manual. It usually does 35 mpg on a long run. No BS. Those are average figures. I think it makes all the difference being a manual as you can pootle it along in a high gear. Of course, it doesn't have to be like that.... Only thing is, I wouldn't recommend it for towing anything.

why? cos of the manual 'box?

There's stacks of torque and a fairly low first gear, but the clutch plate is low mass to enable quick gear changes. The downside is that it overheats rather quickly, and slips.

oh yeah, i saw you say that on the '540 manual' thread...

no, its the auto i want. I have the 540 auto already, but saloon. Check out my other thread 'E39. 540i vs 530D'

i thought i'd split the simple 'what mpg' question out on its own...

I've got an average of 42.1mpg from my 530d manual over the 41,000 miles I've driven it... Last few tanks have actually been best yet - just got 44.6mpg from the tank I filled up with today - 644 miles from 64 litres so would have been over 700 miles on the whole tank.

It is a manual, and I do drive a fair bit of motorways (although enjoy my cross country runs too, and live in London so do mileage in heavy traffic too)

BTW I'm selling it at the moment so PM me if you fancy a bargain of a car...

Manual will see at least 25% better consumption than the autos up until very recently, like 2007 models.

Forgot expecting to get 44mpg from a 530d auto though, if you were seeing 25-30mpg from your 540i then yeah maybe 36mpg from an auto 530d and 44 from a manual, but as you get 17mpg from yoru 540i then expect just under 30mpg.

my dads E39 530d averaged a true 41mpg over 68000 miles.

his current E60 530d has averaged a true 40.5mpg over 30000 miles

I drive hard and including a thrash at brunters and also several Santa Pod trips averaging 27mpg on a 335d!

are you talking about the guy above whose getting 40 mpg?

Several owners are reporting circa 40mpg so it would be a coincidence if they all had the same fault.

42 on a run, 30 around town, both driven with a heavy foot

e39 530d 184 hp no tuning box average with a decnt run every day into work along the m1 a52 total 50 mile round trip gives just under 40mpg on the trip computer. If i drive like a saint you can squeeze more on a long sustained clar run.
