High mileage BMW's - Thoughts?
Discussion
Noticed some great high mileage BMW's out there at great prices; There was a guy on another forum that had a mint 209,000 e34 525i estate that cost him £400.00!
I was wondering if any of you high mileage BMW's out there have noticed any engine probs, loss of power etc, or as I suspect, if the car has been looked after well, this should not matter?
I look forward to your shared thoughts!

I've got a +150,000 miler E28 M535i and a 112,000 miler E34 540i. They've both been looked after very well and (touch wood) run fine. I've not noticed any losses and they both still accelerate hard, don't blow smoke or use excessive oil.
As long as a car has been looked after, you shouldn't find too many problems.
I used to own a +200,000 miler Volvo 740, again that was a great and very cheap motor!

Edited to add, a few years ago I also had a 1990 1.1 litre Fiesta that had done a meagre 75,000 miles. That was a pile of poo, low compression, buggered engine and drank oil like it did petrol. I suppose it goes both ways!

High mileage cars are always a lottery. Personally i'd steer clear of very high mileage diesels. I'd rather have a 200K 530i than a 200K 530d. No doubt someone will say oh i've had a 530d with 300K miles and it never cost me a penny, but to me they are a time bomb - its just a matter of if its going to go off and cost you a fortune during your time of ownership.
I'd probably be ok about a high miles petrol if the price was right

If your only spending a few hundred quid then I dont think you can go too far wrong. If goes wrong then you wont have lost lots of money on it.
I might be a bit wary if I was going to be putting lots more miles on it.. but if your only going to do normal mileage then your not taking all that much risk.
Seems like good cheap driving to me.

I need to sell a 330d at the moment with 170k on it. We also have one with much lower mileage on so I have a good comparison. It hasn't lost any power and still drives fantastically, very tight etc.
It has required a new turbo, MAF sensor, Water pump & apart from that just the usual brakes, tyers etc.
It's been looked after well and has opened my eyes to high mileage cars. I am only selling it as the wife has a hankering for a new car.
I bought it with well over 100k on it and looked at a few others - from what I could see, any diesel bm with less than 100k miles on it at over 5 years old had been clocked.

Seems a fair point as most new BMW diesels are fleet cars.My E36 328 did 214k miles and was still strong as an ox.
I had my 530i Sport run on a rolling road when it was 5 years old with 150k miles.
It returned 232bhp and 302nm of torque.
Book figures are 231bhp and 300nm of torque. Condition wise, it is better than our other E39, a 66k mile 530d of the same age. It has no rattles or squeeks and the interior is absolutely pristine.
It was half the price of a similar example with 40k on it when I bought it at just over 4 years old.
The key is to buy a well looked after former pride and joy from its original owner. If you can do this the only problem with a higher miler is resale value.
But dont buy somebody elses thrashed tatty heap with 7 uncaring owners, regardless of mileage.

ive no idea what that means.. but it sounds great!
my e39 540 is about to hit 150.000 miles and its stoopid powerful. goes like a train, drives superbly. full BMWSH might have somthing to do with it though, and the fact its always been a motorway car maybe. its not let me down in the 2 years of ownership.... i certainly wouldnt let a high mileage put me off a BM, as long as its been looked after. no problem. my last car was a E34 535 and that had 142.000 miles on when i sold it. i owned it for 6 years and it let me down once.. brilliant car....
I think you will find that small engined cars i.e. sub 1.6ltrs dont do big milages in general i.e. had it by 100k.
Bigger engines spend more of their time at lower rpm's (longer geared) so less stress.
Doesnt one of the US 5.7V8's only need oil changes up to 100,000 miles!!! & of course pads, discs & tyres rest there is nothing in the service schedule + it shuits down 4 of its 8 cylinders when on a cruise to conserve fuel - it also after a while changes which 4 are being used for firing. Great engine
