E46 330 problems - any ideas
Discussion
I can't get the car to a dealer for a couple of weeks but I have 2 problems which I wondered if anyone had come across this before.
Car is an 2002 E46 330i auto saloon which has done 63k.
When coming to a stop there is a noticable 'shunt' as it changes down into 1st.
It only does it going into 1st. Other gears are fine.
It happens whatever gearbox mode the car is being driven in.
Secondly, there is an odd noise coming from the engine. Odd on the basis that my 330 coupe doesn't make the same sound.
Imagine putting a cable tie into the spokes of a revolving bicycle wheel.
It's a sort of ticking noise which speeds up and slows down with the engine being revved.
The car doesn't seem to use any oil.
Any ideas ?
Cheers

First thing sounds like the propshaft doughnut, haven't a clue about the second problem, viscous fan coupling or a damaged belt?Car is an 2002 E46 330i auto saloon which has done 63k.

I've no idea about your problem 2, but the shunt was something that mine also did when I first got it (same model 2002 facelift).
From reading around, my understanding is that it's down to how we drive. I'm told that the ECU "learns" the way we drive and tries to respond to that by tightening up responsiveness from the throttle and gear changes.
By simply driving in a smoother and more granny like way, not only have I improve fuel economy, but mine has now improved the smoothness of it's downchange into first.
So my suggestion is to simply drive it more nicely.

Thanks for the responses.
We only bought the car recently from someone who only used it on the motorway. We use it around town and on A roads.
Its possible that the gearbox ecu needs to learn our driving style but deep down I suspect its a fault.
Its due an MOT in a couple of weeks so I'll get the ATF changed at the same time. Is there a way to put the ECU into 'learn' mode myself or is it dealer only job ?
Will have a listen to the manifold gaskets in the morning.
