Squeeky Steering on 530d and X5sd

Is there a common fault with BMW steering?
I have a 55 plate 530d and the steering squeeks at regular intervals, especially when warm and manouvering at slow speed.
The wifes new X5sd arrived 4 weeks ago and this now does the same thing!
Help?

I had this on my 535... especially at low speed.
Never figured out what it was - and have now changed to a 335. This doesn't squeek!

Yes common fault - it's the steering wheel adjusting mechanism or more commonly the casette (called wickelfederkasette in german - sorry don't know the english word ) which makes up the electrical connections for your steering wheel functions.

I had the upper column replaced about 4 months ago and the squeak was introduced then.

Apparently there's also a seperate noise that can come from the steering hydraulics and there's an additive for the fluid to quiet that down.
