Workshop Manuals?

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know if it is possible to get workshop manuals? I have searched around on the net and message boards that talk of manual from Bently, but I preferably would want a BMW one - I am after for E39.
I know some manufacturers can be very stubbon in selling to Joe Public - is BMW in that boat? Does anyone know if they are paper manuals or electronic for the dealers, protected via a dongle or able to be pdf'd or printed?

I thought the Bentley ones were considered the better manual by mechanics in the know.
If you look around on the BMW forums, you can normally find all of them for download as pdf. I've got the E36 one and it is pretty good. There's normally also one just dedicated to the electrical wiring.
