Has anyone got any knowledge of real world fuel consumption on the 3.0 SD? BMW claim 34.4mpg, but i don't believe that for a second. Thanks

Probably high 20's on average. I'd a e70 3.0d that averaged around 27mpg and i've no reason to believe the SD would be any more economical - certainly not by more than one mpg or so. Purely round town will drop you to 20mpg.

They can pull around 34 on very long runs, but any town driving at all will see the economy plummet - big heavy car with 4x4 system = bad news.

Thanks for that. I have an X5 4.4 petrol old shape and that does 18 to 19 on average. I ordered this SD some months ago with expected delivery date of late July. I just got a phone call this morning from the dealer to say it has arrived early. Thing is, he offered me only £16,500 on my one. That offer coupled with such high derv prices is making me think twice about it.

Bit late to reply but my X5 3.0sd has done 24.7mpg over 11k miles which I'm very disappointed with considering the official combined mpg is 34.4mpg. This is typical of 3.0sd's as I understand other owners get this sort of mpg as well. The problem is motorway driving and the aerodynamic drag of the X5 compared to a saloon car. If you habitually drive on motorways at normal fast motorway speeds ie 85-90mph, you'll get no better than 26mpg which is way down on a typical saloon car. My previous car was a 730d and that used to get well in excess of 30mpg at similar speeds
If you're happy to stick to 70mph in your X5, you might get closer to the official combined mpg

What did you finally decide?
