Considering a MY 2000 100k 528i for some motorway work I've got coming up. They seem good value at the mo and I've always rated the e39. Been told they wear their miles very well.
I seem to recall there was a nikasil(sp) issue? Not sure of what this actually means, but what should I look out for? Any yr / plate to avoid?
Or is it a case of an 8 yr old car would have either failed by now / been rectified / was never effected?
Any pointers would be great.
Cheers,
Matt

Yes...yes...and yes!
To the extent that I had the confidence to buy my wife a December 1997 528i Touring with a genuine 65K miles on the clock last week...completely unseen...from of all places the N.E of England which was absolutely prime "Nikasil-Issue-Country".

Well, it is true that there are now lots and lots of E39 528i's to choose from so if you want to be sure it's certainly easy enough to find one where there will be no question mark at all hanging over it.
The Touring I bought for my wife the other day?...Well, the spec, condition, mileage, history etc were too much for me to pass it by.
It's true I am running that 'potential risk'...I hope I we don't have a problem...

As above check with BMW, they will tell you definitively if it is a post Nikasil car.
I've had my 528i for seven years. I never intended to keep it that long but it really is a fine car and I genuinely can't find anything to replace it. They are starting to look dated but you will be hard pressed to find anything new that is a great leap forward in the way it drives. It's an effortless motorway cruiser and has enough grunt to make it enjoyable on back roads.
Nothing specific to look out for in terms of weak points. The only downside to mine (it's an auto) is that it struggles to do more than 20mpg around town. Also, I can't get much more than 32mpg on a long run without trying very hard.

I have a 528(2000)auto sport. I love it. If you get a post week10 1998 car it will not be nikasil block...
However I'd go for a + 1999 car as it will have the dual vanos m52tu engine is great and slightly better on fuel than the earlier M52 single vanos engines.
Some of the earlier Nikasil cars are good bargins as they should have had a new block fitted, therefore the closk may read 100k miles but the block may have only done 20k+ depending on when it was changed.
