E39 530 Sport Pinking

My E39 530 Sport seems a bit prone to pinking when driven gently around town, always light throttle and low revs.

Is this common with these engines & If so does anyone have any tips on how to reduce it, I try to run it on super unleaded to minimise the problem but it doesn't have much of an effect. I would have thought the knock sensor should detect it and retard the ignition?
