How different are the E39 540 and 535 engines?
Is it just a difference in displacement?
I know my E36 328i was restricted by the factory with the inlet manifold and air intake too meet certain lower performance requirements. Also people have changed these parts to release up to 30-40bhp, which is a useful figure.
Is this the case with the E39 also?
Are there any useful upgrades that can be made to increase the performance on the E39 535i?

Serial reprogramming can release around 10 bhp and make the car drive and shift better (auto) but I dont believe there is much else apart from supercharging.
Yeah thats not really worth it. I was hoping there may be a chance that the 535 was a restricted motor and there was a way of letting the power out. Hopes of 40hp hidden have been dashed

Yeah well that maybe the case on paper but I have driven many BMW’s and this 535i does seem like a cracking car. The steering isn’t what I would describe as numb, although you feel the extra girth a little. However my brother isn’t racing it, or taking towards its limits, he’s wafting around and giving it some beans when appropriate and enjoying the torque curve.
He’s got a great colour, M suspension, M interior in leather, a useful amount of horsepower. I already mentioned a nice torque curve. I think better than the 6 pot 530 from memory and that lovely V8 rumble, which of course the 530 can never have.
Costs wise I can see that much of difference for him. The car has done its depreciating. He got a killer deal on it and its super low mileage. He gets most of his spanner work done for free so just pays for parts and the major service items.
For him it suits him down to the ground.

There's very little cheap power on these cars other than a rechip which 'might' get you 10-30bhp extra.
Any more engine work and you'd end up spending more than the cost of the car. However, a supercharger should easily see a 40% rise in power, but then you'll need to address the brakes.

Hey there, thanks for that buddy. Yeah its not worth the expense really. It was worth checking to see if there were any quick gains to be had.
He’s happy with it. His mates got an M5 but it’s frustrating to drive in the school run. This 535 is better for that and for the jaunts up and down the motorway he makes every so often.
