Iphone and Bluetooth connection

I've got a 2004 E46 TV/Sat nav thingy (mark 4?). It comes with bluetooth phone prep.

I have an Iphone and I can pair the phone up, but it drops the connection upon making/receiving a call.

I've read somewhere else that the bluetooth software will need updating due to the iphone being so new and advanced.

Has anyone managed to do this as my local independant dealer recons it can't be done (after referring to a mate he has at BMW dealership).

There are 13 generations that can be fitted from 2003 to date with considerable overlap in production and install. Not all phones are compatible and compatibility comes and goes for a given phone over generations, hence someone with around a Gen 3 pairs to an iphone a 9th does not, but a 13 does...
