BMW 320i MPG?

Anyone on here own an E90 320i? Was wondering what real world mileage is like?

They seem to be much cheaper than 320d's

Not a great engine in them, gutless and relatively noisy four pot. I had one as a loaner and managed to average 28mpg when i had it, as opposed to 42mpg in a 320d.

Plus dont forget it will be worth less come resale time, and that the 320d can get a 40BHP power and economy boost using something like www.tuningbox.com

Small petrol engined BMWs are generally unloved.

Hmm true but it has to be better than a 318i for sure? Theres a £4k difference in price + the difference in fuel prices - i'm inclined to think i petrol is starting to make more sense over a diesel IMHO off course...

My '05 320D Auto averages 47 according to the copmuter, mix of long/short runs.

Yeah, well just because its better than a 318i doesnt make it 'good'

I just feel there is no comparison in the engines. I'd go as far as to say, i would prefer a mondeo over a 320i.

Also, i'm not seeing a 4K difference in prices?

For 2005 E90 new model 4 door saloon with less than 60K miles on autotrader....

320i - £9490 -> £19995
320d - £10995 -> £19995

Also, another quick sample - looking at BMWs website and searching for an 06 320d M Sport, black with black leather.

320i - £18990
320d - £19495

I'd say at worst you should be able to get a 320d for maybe £100 - £1500 more expensive than a 320i if you root around enough.

320i SE Manual - 2005 55 reg 14k miles £12,000

Find me a 320d even an ES and I'll take it - theres nothing at all in this price range with this mileage/age in a 320d

........and with you making it out to be so ste no owner will own up and now come on this thread telling me their mpg

I have no experience of the 320i but I am not surprised the 320D is much higher priced.

Mine is an '05, 55 plate and has done 54K, still a pleasure to drive and for a 2L performance is effortless.

I would guess that if someone bought a D back then they will have planned to do more than 5K per year, which may be why you can't find many at that low mileage.

If you are going to get a (modern) 4 pot BMW, then diesel is the only sensible choice by a long shot.
Ok, they might sound like a bag of spanners chucked down the fire-escape, but they go well and are easy on fuel.
Even if the choice was between a 320i and a 318D, I'd still plump for the oil burner.
If the 320i was still a 6 pot then perhaps i'd think different..

325i is 6 cylinder
Sounds pretty ace

Ok heres my car of choice then....

2005 55 reg 320d SE 10K miles £13,250 at a dealers, no doubt he'll knock £750 for a straight sale. Even if he doesnt i'd still find the extra £1250

Two things about the lack of 320i owners responses

(a) i dont think there are too many

Yeah, thats never easy. Though it could be worse, i live in northern ireland so i'd have a flight to make.

Personally, it wouldnt annoy me if you were getting the car at the right price.

But you pays your money and you makes your choice.

If nothing else it demonstrates that there isnt necessarily £4K of a difference in prices between the petrol and diesel cars, if you're prepared to travel a bit.

I guess its just something else to factor in to your purchase equations.

There are several in the BMW network, 05 on from £11K to £20K. Are they too much in general or just more expensive then non BMW dealers? Point is that any dealer can get one of the network cars to you locally.

Thats worth knowing. I was looking for an 05 535d M Sport and was searching nationally. As it happened a local dealer had one well worth the money - withing £300 of the cheapest in the UK - but i'd have flown over to the mainland for the right car. Worth knowing they could have had it brought to me.

It's just that back in Feb when we bought our Z4 my original intention was to go for a nearly new and my dealer said he could get any of the cars shown on the BMW database. In the end we got a good deal on new so it didn't apply.

I had a 320i MSport Coupe for a weekend recently, and it returned approx. 37mpg with a mix of driving. I'm planning on selecting one as my next company car in the next week or so.....
