To any X5 owners or people with experience of the car, are the costs associated with this vehicle as high as the likes of WhatCar make out? I would be looking at one of the diesels but am worried about reliablility costs and the fuel consumption.

I currently drive an E46 318. Obviously I expect a hike in the running costs but I'm not sure what to expect.

Seems a good time to buy with good examples available for sub-£15k.

Thanks,

what engine you thinking of?

Running costs will be higher because...

they're harder on fuel - probably 25 - 30% moreso over say a 5 series equivalent
they're relatively more expensive than the equivalent 5 series
A budget of 15K will probably buy you an older x5 than an equivalent 5 series therefore it may require more maintenance
The extra technology in them - usually autos and 4x4 systems add complexity

I've got a 2001 X5 3.0D, I get about 28ish mpg in normal driving and over 30 on a run, I don't do many long runs.
Tyres are £200 a corner for the diamatrix (sp?) origional fitment, but I got Goodyears for £130 a corner. I test drove one with big wheels fitted and found that this made a slightly jittery ride really bumpy.

Mines a sport model (as most are) which gets you black headlining, sports seats, and harder suspension.
It's really not sporty though....

Mines been fine untill recently when it's started to make a slight clunking noise from the rear over bumps. It'll be geting looked at soon so I'll know more about running costs then!

I've found it to be a nice thing to trundle about in, it's fast enough most of the time, and is massively practical compared to my previous 330ci. Just don't take it offroad.

A mate runs a 2001 3.0ltr petrol X5 and although he has had a second set of wheels with winter tyres for two seasons, he's still running on his original Michelin 'Energy' tyres after circa 40,000+ summer miles and they appear to be in great condition (although he's considering replacing them shortly due to their age!).

Ditto. My Dad also runs a 2001 3.0d X5 and averages at least 28 and does very few long journeys (but he does drive like a vicar wink )

Incidentally, his is also for sale in the classifieds smilehttp://www.pistonheads.com/sales/669285.htm
