I have ordered "Cruise Control with Brake Assist" on my new BMW and I would be grateful if someone in the know could tell me exactly what functionality this will have. I presume it is not stop/start cruise control but is it what other manufacturers call "active cruise" control that will maintain a safe distance behind other vehicles?

Any help would be appreciated.

It will brake the car if it senses the distance between you and the car in front is too close I guess?

I have to ask why you would order something without first finding out what it does.

Its whereby the car brakes for you to maintain your desired speed. For example, if you have set cruise control to 40mph and go down a steep hill, with regular cruise control using just engine braking it wont stop the car speeding up, however brake assist will actually brake for you.

It will also brake for you and give you a shirty warning message on the idrive if you have cruise control set too high for the car to take a corner at speed.

I liked it for being able to drop quickly from a 40mph to 30mph speed, say coming into towns. My previous 535d and x5 had it, my current 535d doesnt and i do miss it :-(

Basically it works in the same way as normal cruise but will keep the car at the pre-set speed in situations when the car may naturally accelerate or deaccelerate, like on a tight bend or going up/down a steep hill....

Word of warning from the manual though! - The system will not work when the handbrake is engaged hehe

No it wont. See my response above.

Also, the brake assist functionality comes with cruise control, so if the o/p wants cruise control, then its perfectly reasonable to tick that box then find out later what the added functionality does, is it not?

Just as pgilc1 said, I wanted cruise control and was not that bothered at the time what the brake assist bit did. Just curious now as delivery gets nearer!

My BMW of nine years has 'ariel diversity system', and I've never known what that is. I also didn't know it had folding mirrors for the first seven years!

Brake Assist isn't anything to do with that system that slams the brakes on for you if it thinks you're trying to do an emergency stop? I think that's normally called Emergency Brake Assist but close enough to be possible.

It allows you to carry multiple types of laundry detergent without issue... biggrin

It means there are two aerials and the radio uses the stronger signal switching between them as required.
