530d Servicing

Hi guys,

Is there anything 'Special' about the servicing requirements of the E39 530d? I've been trying to get some prices etc sorted to get Dad's 530d serviced, it's due an Inspection 1 soon.

Co-incidently, the last service I had done on my 530i was an Inspection 1 - my local dealer charged me £140 and I supplied the BMW Approved Castrol Edge oil myself. I asked for the same routine again only this time it was £189. Nobody seemed to know why it was more.

So I telephoned Scothall in Southampton, who advertise on their website that for cars 6 years old and over (Which the car now is, just), you get 50% off labour, 'significantly discounted oil' and 10% off parts. Looks good. There are some sample prices there - for a 6 cylinder 3 Series, ie a 330i, it costs from £175 including VAT. Sounds like a great offer.

They've just got back to me with a price. £250 inc VAT.

Why is the 530d so much more to service than a 3 Series/5 Series petrol Six? They take the same quantity (6 litres) of the same SLX Longtec II 0w30 oil!

Isn't Insp 1 more than just an oil change ?
I expect the other parts on a diesel might be more expensive.
Similarly the 'book time' to change might be longer meaning a higher labour charge.

Yes it is, I'm aware of that, but it's the biggest parts charge of an Inspection 1.

The price difference would suggest it takes an hour longer. Does anyone know why this would be?

There is no major difference, its basically an oil change. £250 is taking the piss for 10 minutes actual work.
