Why is the 130i M sport a better car than the R32?

contemplating both, aside from mpg and tax which I have factored in, and the 130i wins, what other reasons do I need to choose the beamer??

Seen both topgear and fifth gear reviews so just want to hear your thoughts?

130 : Ugly, cramped, peachy engine, surprisingly economical
R32 : Bit less ugly, more space, heavier, thirstier, fab engine noise !

No bad choice to make - so don't sweat it ! If you can live with the looks have the 130 - that's what I did

i think I can, but know what you mean about the room... its for wife really, and me on weekends..
got 320d m sport tourer, and love the rwd feel of it... think the 130i will be more entertaining drive than the well planted r32...

Did 5th gear not do a head to head round the Angelsey track ? The R32 won (by a small margin) but interestingly seemed more inclined to oversteer than the 1er !

Yes it is... nothing in it round the track but r32 did win....not sure of the oversteer bit

I would keep some money in the bank and get a GTi DSG.
Of the two, no doubt a 130 will be a great drive but I'd get the R32. Prepare for depreciation & havy fuel bills though.

I looked at the 1 series before I bought my R32.Rear seat accomodation wasnt too good(the car is used primarily to carry my family around).The 1 didnt feel as well put together and when I drove the R32 it just felt(and sounded) right.

The 130 is down to sensible prices now. They are also quicker cross country than an E39 M5. Put a diff in the 1, and its a pretty complete car. The Golfs 4wd system is flawed (imo) and anything that puts drive through the steering axle is flawed anyway.

What is your definition of cross country?

With drivers of equal ability at the wheel, I find it hard to believe that a 130i would be quicker than a fit and healthy E39 M5 under any circumstances.
