autocar review of new 330d

im reading this thinking yes ,yes, yes, then comes the kicker at the end "although the 3 series now runs 4th generation run flat tyres it still cant match the c class for overall ride comfort around town its a little ragged." B

why do they insist on these tyres?i love my 120d auto EFF.DYN. apart from the ride .Ive got a box on it and from a power to MPG ratio cant think what might better it. Cant imagine what the first generation runflats were like but to me i imagine its like being able to get into and drive a tonka toy.Really puts me off .

I was in a C320 the other day with 'Sports' suspension and it was like my E46 SE.
Some people, not me, like the rft's, and on a motorway, for example they're ok. If your 120 has Pirelli Euforias, changing them to continental Sportcontact2s transforms the ride and handling (with a little more psi) for under £500. Imho the Prielis combined with the 120 setup was bordering on unsafe. From what I've read though, other rft's are better.
Why they're not an option when buying new I don't know. Everything else is

very frustrating, from what you read BMWs are still just about better than mercs in every dept apart from the ride.Im not prepared to put up with driving an expensive car that is vaguely similar to what you might ride in a warehouse.A real shame.
The ride is great once runflats are ditched.thats it though dx why should you have to, surely theyve done market research ,wonder why they went this route, i would love to trade up to a 3 series but when i make my move i reckon it will be a c320cdi with a brabus chip, that is a shame .

a couple of years ago the wife went to buy a cooper s - came as standard with run flats and the already hard ride was, frankly, daft with the rft.
told the dealer that unless he fitted proper tyres we wouldnt buy, after much nashing and wailing and us getting up to walk ago they agreed. so picked car up with normal tyres - best thing for it.

Understand the issue and frustration with run flats on the BMW but on the subject of the Merc I had a run in a friend's new C320 Cdi Sport recently and, while a very nice car overall, I couldn't believe the amount of road noise from the tyres (and this on the standard 17" wheels). To put it in context I reckon if anything my E46 M3CS generates less road noise and probably rides almost as smoothly as well! Edited by carlovers on Wednesday 3rd September 19:59
Not sure if you've tried a C320 CDi but all I'm trying to say is that it could prove just as wearing on a long run as a BMW on run flats albeit for a different reason. Mind, I suppose you can drown out road noise with the stereo whereas you can't get away from a fidgety ride quite so easily!

fair enough but why should i have to go to all that trouble and expense after purchasing a "premium brand"ridiculous.
You wont be expecting this but in say 15k miles the rubber bits that touch the ground wear out and you generally buy a new set.bennno

JN thanks for that, appreciated. I was going to let this thread die because i cant be bothered replying to sarcastic posts.
You have encapsulated my OP exactly. A great car is going to be compromised.I am curious as to why they must know the feedback on forums is not good yet they persevere.I do a shed load of miles and realise i would prefer a less harsh ride.
When i test drove it i didnt really notice but overtime i find it gets on my nerves just too bumpy. Thanks again
