How much should head gasket and starter motor cost on 318?

My friend's 1997 E36 318 has gone and blown it's head gasket and starter motor, apparently he was told the head gasket would cost £300 parts and £400 labour. I know this is balls, just wondering how much he should roughly be paying, from an independent and a main dealer?

eta: he says it was smoking quite a lot, probably rings, add that to the job? I haven't seen the car btw.

He's not wrong... I got sod all for my 318i a few years ago, that was long before these market conditions came along, plus it didn't have any problems.
