I didnt know an awful lot about BMW's when i bought my first one, a 2004 318Ci Sport complete with 2.0 4pot. Cheap insurance, cheap running costs blah blah - who needs a 6cyl engine?

Now i have a 6cyl engine by way of Z4, er, how did i live without one. Averaged 41mpg to work and back today, with roof down, sounds awesome - it's incredibly smooth - I'm an arse for thinking i didnt need one in my life.

But yes, the 6 cylinder is simply the only way to go.

2.5 model.

It is 99% motorway 100 mile round trip. That includes the return leg being made with the roof down.

TBH you feel like driving a lot slower when roof is down, weather is staying nice for it too.

When i got to work this morning it had dropped to 37 and i did a bit of harsh driving last night!

Aye but you have to - no point nailing it up and down the motorway, gets you nowhere any quicker really.

Its drops considerably when you give it some stick.

Also, the sport button, completely changes the car!! Wow.

I love BMW straight 6 engines - some of the best in the world.

However, it's the start of a slippery slope.

I've be over the moon if I could get even 30mpg. I have no self restraint in the car. Good thing it's only a weekend car or the fuel price would kill me

I had the same engine prior in the E46, perfectly respectable, and a fantastic engine in the Z4 - i had one for a couple of days. I did manage 45 on the work run though!

It's just the wonderful noise and the silky smoothness of it that you will never understand until you have driven one. I was the same.

I have had a number of 6cyl BMW's in the past (Alpina B10, M535i, 2.8 Z3) and agree that the noise is a treat that I do miss a bit I would go as far as to say that aside from yankee V8s its the best sounding engine I have ever driven.

But the 2.0 has a nice sound of its own and its all I could afford at the time

Mind you I might go for an //M next if the credit crunch has gone away by the time I am due a change.
