E31 problem

Right spent 56 odd hours on the 840 detailing it up to a respectable standard ready to use this weekend, so its all done, as its the old mans car, i thought i would be nice take it down to the pub for him(ie show off, i love it lol) only 5 mins down the road. so pick him up, a minute away from the house, there right headlight is emitting smoke...get up to the house sharpish, pull up on drive both headlights emitting lots of smoke, kill it quickly pop the bonnet... something stinks, and i mean stinks, doesnt smell like fire though, so tentaivly open the bonnet, if there is a fire dont want to induce more oxygen....nope just smoke....
so for anyone familiar with the 4.4 V8 in these, as you look at the engine from the front of the car, what is the pulley and belt that is on the bottom left of the engine, actually on the engine.... what im guessing happened is that the pulley is going around the belt isnt, its wearing the belt away, friction-heat-smoke....just want to know what it is, so we know its nothing to serious or any damage that could be done...

now to order a low loader and get it down to autotech

If it's the serpentine belt then it drives pretty much everything: alternator, water pump, power steering pump, air con pump, you did the right thing to stop driving it before it let go. Hopefully it'll be something obvious rubbing against it and will be an easy fix.

yes, what i am hoping, i thought it would drive the waterpump, the belt looks cracked and perished, so hopefully its the belt or tensioner thats gone...low loader time

That is the Air Conditioning belt. I suspect the AC has not been used for a while and the compressor is seized. It could also be the tensioner bearing seized but you will need to remove the belt and see.
You will now need a new belt and tensioner pulley anyway, I recommend the alloy replacements from PhoenixMotorsport and see if the AC compressor is seized or not.
The other serpentine belt drives the PAS, WP and alternator.
If you remove the AC belt, you can drive the car indefinately, no low loader or recovery necessary.
