E32 Engine/Cooling - Help Needed
Discussion
Afternoon all
I normally wouldn't post anything when it comes to my car as most things are easily figured, but this latest one has us stumped:
The bottom line is that a few months ago the temperature went through the roof, thanks to a split coolant hose which was fixed without any permanent damage.
Only problem is, as usual, it damaged the thermostat which became obvious when the temperature started changing
Sooooo new thermostat in and it's cured it for the most part, but the temperature was rising when static and ticking over...had it looked at today by a friend and there was air in the system, but not much....until we undid the thermostat, outer housing bleed screw....it was firing steam out, no water at all, almost as if water hadn't been reaching that area.
Now the car has no sign of HG failure, heater works ok, but takes it's time, it's not using coolant so far as we can tell, but it's continuing to build pressure inside the outer housing (nearest rad) and continuing to overheat.....although it's not got to the point of boiling over as yet!
Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?
Radiator is warm all the way through and no apparent blockages and no normal signs of HG buggeration
All replies greatfully received
Thanks in advance
Scott

6 pot engines are a pig to bleeed, keep trying bleeding it. do you get heat out of the heaters in the car?
also when bleeding the car set the heaters to full. does the bottom rad hose get warm/hot?
when I did my e39 I put the car on ramps to get the front as high as possible.
have you got the right coolant mix? 50/50. as coolant raises the boiling point of water (to about 118 degrees i think)

Thanks for that, was also speaking with Marquis Rex about the six pot bleeding and he said it's a pain tooalso when bleeding the car set the heaters to full. does the bottom rad hose get warm/hot?

I will be running the thing up to my mates in a week or so, flushing the system and bleeding from cold

I agree with what David said, the six pots are a bit of a nightmare, especially the M30 engines. I had a similar problem with my E28 525i, once I had done a coolant change I had real problems with it overheating and suffering from air in the system.

I'm glad that the opinion seems to be unified in favor of it being an airlock...if the HG went I would be gutted, skint and looking for a 3.5 block

You could (just in case, you understand) go out and purchase a 3.5 block and head just to be sure...
