Groaning noise from heater fan

My E39 makes a load groaning noise for a couple of seconds from the heater fan under the following conditions
1. When the ignition is switched on
2. When the engine is started
3. When the windscreen demist fan button is selected
Other than that, it works fine. Can anyone suggest the cause/cure.
Note: I've recently replaced the final stage resistor (hedgehog) but am thinking the arrival of this noise is a coincidence as I swaped the hedgehog for a second time just to make sure the hedgehog was not responsible
