After a month or two looking, and hunting for the right one, i've finally found the "one".

I've been out of the BMW world for 3 or 4 years (brief tvr ownership), but it feels good to be back.

This whole "credit crunch" is great if you are in the postion to buy.

Ahh, that would be a good idea smile

Its a "53" reg, 4.4, in gun metal grey, with black nappa leather.

Extras include heated seats, dvd satnav and a nifty loadliner for the dog wink

Very nice.

I had a 3.0d and TBH i was putting £500 of diesel a month in it at one point and the novelty wore off. Loved the car though, i could see me having another at some point if my mileage stablises.

Speaking of, do you do much miles?

No more than 5k a year, and I attempted to do some maths to work out the mpg difference between the diesel and petrol:

5000 average miles @ combined mpg vs price difference in price between diesel and petrol prices....

about £175 difference, in the favour of the diesel.

But when I took into account the premium that the 3.0d X5's are attracting, it took "a lot" of miles for me to get the extra money back.

The X5 has 70k on the clock, and I paid £6k plus a 2000 reg Audi TT with 97k.

How good is that! My wife has been complaining about the consumption of her Focus ST3 and we've been considering swapping to a diesel. Ran the figures and for £4k to change it would take 4,5yrs to pay back. Not worth changing she said! Result!

Was the diesel the same year as the ST3?

Yeah if you're not doing the miles, a cheaper big petrol is the way to go

plus, i've only ever gone up in engine size....

1.6 Fiesta
1.8 BMW 318
3.0 BMW M3
3.2 BMW M3
4.0 TVR Tuscan
4.4 BMW X5

So it seemed right to keep to the trend. biggrin

Is there anything I should look out for on these cars?

Nat, just done the same as you and JUMPED into X5 land and LUVING it.... went to the car auction as Bedford last week to buy a 3.0D ....... thinking they would be great value with the news telling us the world is about to end financially, all the 04-05 cars making 15-16.5 k ....... then a 06 4.8 came through in imola red big spec and only 9 k on the clock, still warranty ....... couldn’t help myself…..30 mins later I’m on the phone to the other half breaking the news (and watching the TV in it!!) done 300 miles so far and getting 22 mpg mixed (light foot on motorway saw 27 mpg) the v8 sounds so good and off the line surprisingly quick.

Not looking fwd to washing it... got to be a days work!!

Brilliant - what did you get it for out of interest?

I'm thinking of swapping my E39 530d for something bigger / estate-like (3rd kid on the way) and the X5 fits the bill perfectly... and whilst the 3.0d makes the most sense I still drool over the iS's... which are taking an absolute pasting at the moment. My neighbour claims to average 30mpg out of his 3.0d so 22 isn't unreasonable when you consider the added fun factor.

The MPG vs FUN calculation is very simple, you will have a silly grin on your face when you start it up and every time you hit the “fun pedal”, for 4-8 mpg it’s a no brainer.

Got knocked down at 18.6k which was only 3k more then a very sad looking 4.8 on an 05 with no warranty and 40k on the clock, 4.4 2004’s making ~12k.

When you look at the spec on the big petrol x5’s vs diesel they make a lot of sense, resale in 3-4 years on either fuel types will be NOTHING so its down to writing off the purchase cost, again if your have fun in it its an easy sum to do, OK servicing / tyres (they are MASSSSSSIVE on the 4.8) will run to more ££ then a diesel but if you can live with then do it

Sorry Nat hijacked your thread.

cool Nat
surprised how well the x5 handles for such a big vehicle, might be a little firm a ride for those that want a 4*4 for the real rough stuff, but as the toughest conditions I (and most x5’s) are lightly to see will be going to a car boot sale I don’t see it as an issue.

A reminder for anybody going to auction, make sure all the bits are there...... I was a little (lot) excited and during my post purchase check didn't notice the scissor jack was missing arhhh

Will try and post a pic if I can figure out how.my post purchase check didn't notice the sizzer jack was missing arhhh

just bought a X5 3.0 petrol. I do about 15,000 miles a year. They wanted another £2300 for the identical diesel . Not worth the money in my opinion. Blue 04 plate.
Love the drive and wouldn`t go back to a normal car now.
ENJOY
