1-Series Brake failure - twice!
Discussion
My car has just experienced brake failure for the second time. It's now been recovered to the local dealer to my office.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? There's one instance on BMWland where the guys wife ended up crashing into a field to avoid the car in front.
My symptoms were akin to a complete servo failure - rock hard brake pedal and no retardation at all. The first time it was a matter of seconds, this morning it was for longer and I had to stop the car using the gears and handbrake. More by luck than skillful driving I would add, two green lights on a Motorway roundabout and a run to a layby meant I could stop in relative safety. If the lights had gone red or someone stopped I would be telling you about the acciudent as well.
I've told the garage and BMW Recovery people that I don't want the car back until they find the fault. If anyone tells me they can't find anything and I should just try it then they'll be wearing a 130....

If the brake peddle was totally solid and there was no braking going on at all I would suspect the ABS unit, not the servo.
If the servo goes you can still brake but the peddle is much harder.
If the ABS unit goes bonkers it can switch the valves so that the brake master cylinder is not connected to the calipers. It should never do this and there is a second watch dog controller looking out for problems which can cut power to the valves and return them to a safe state. It could be sticky valves or a bug in the primary ABS controller and the secondary.

I had just this on a brand new Cherokee once.
After the 4th time (in 5 months), and the garage couldn't find anything wrong, I gave it back.
A few months later, there was a recall on them... I was pretty pissed off the garage could only plug the computer in rather than actually try and find the fault.
