Hi dudes

My wifes gotta E46 2002 316ti SE Compact (1800cc 126bhp), suffering from lack of torque below 3000rpm ??
Now I seem to remember quite a gutsy even torque/power output across the rev range. It never seemed to need to be revved to get the power out. Now it does, 3000 rpm is where the power is then its fine.
Weve had it since 2003, and its been fine apart from this. (main dealer serviced untill 2006)
This syptom i first observed 2 yrs back, 2006 when it was.....
a) first serviced by an independant, and
b) perhaps several months prior to a) I bought & started driving a Jag XKR (so is this me?)

Since then its been serviced again, had a new set of coil packs (4), proper bmw approved plugs, and been on the diagnostics machine as well as taken to the local BMW main agents diags machine (via the inipendant).
All revealing nothing.

So, has anyone seen this symptom before?
Or, am i suffering from driving a 400bhp Jag to much?
Wife (regular user) doesnt really notice (what would you expect!!)

all comments gratefully recieved.

It's got 126bhp for gods sake. I've known sewing machines with more power. It is fine and you've been spoilt.

Seems normal to me smile

But seriously - is the E46 compact fitted with old 1.8? Or the latter 1.9? I know the earlier (M42 i think) units were 1.8 and can suffer from a corroded rubber pipe at the back of the unit that causes a stutter or seeming lack of torque, my old E36 318i suffered with this - but really it makes them feel 'asthmatic' (Will check with my spanner-slinging mate for correct name/location), but as for the later 1.9 (The reason i ask is my E36 '99 is a 1.9 as are friends E36 '318' compacts? And they are 'quite' torque-less below 3k - let me know and I will endeavour to discover further facts if i helps!

Thanks!

I tend to think its me too paoloh! But i was asking just in case anyone had seen the same symptom..........you never know.

Getting back to j44esd, its the 1800cc 16v, fitted on the compact 2002-2006 ish, certainly not the earlier 1900cc, or indeed the later 1600cc. So well worth asking youre mates.

cheers

So it is! Further googling leads me to the N46B18 1796cc 16v? So on this assumption I will chat to the aforementioned friend and get back to you!

Sorry for the delay - it is apparently the air intake pipe - and is a rubber pipe at the back of the engine below the plastic cover (Back, as you look at it from the front of the car). Hope it is off use!
