sodding E36 electric window fault

It started with the usual hammering motor noise at the top of the close, then it would go up half way then stop.
I took the regulator/motor assembly out, replaced the motor, refitted the regulator but without attaching the ball ends to the window runners.......and it still stops halfway, any ideas?
