I guess alot depends on the type of journeys your mrs is doing. My 535d does the school run each day, and we only see 24mpg as well. However I easily see 35-40 on a longer run

we had a 535d before the x5 - put 65k miles on it in 2 years - superb car - same ref the fuel - around town around 27-28 easily; motor way much better - however - with the x5 even on the motorway struggle to get anywhere near 30mpg.
i can get over 30mpg out of my 997 turbo on a round trip to london - x5 is lovely car - but regret getting the twin turbo, perhaps should have opted for the 3.0d - not sure if that any better mind -

I had an e70 3.0d SE, Nov 07 reg. Averaged 28mpg on long commutes, 22-25mpg if mostly road town.

I too had a 535d before that - it was an LCI May 07 model - did 37mpg over the same long commutes.

On paper, there is very little between them - I thought you got the extra pace with the 'S' but not the pain at the pumps - maybe not...

Notice BMW now instead offer the 'X5 xDrive35d' is that a rebadged 3.0SD or is it a different lump?
It will be harder on fuel in the same way as the 535d is harder than the 530d - the more you do round town the bigger that difference will be.

rebadged in line with the x6

no need for the 'xDrive' bit really is there ? other than filling a bit more space on the side/back of car

Would have been simpler to allign X6 with previous X5 format really!
Though xDrive sounds more funky that 3.0d.
