Sorry for the long post.
Recently i have been getting a vibration through the clutch pedal when pressed slightly and a 'grumble / shudder' when accelerating in 5th 6th from lower reves.
As far as i know this points to clutch / flywheel failure
My car is a Jan 05 530d and is out of BMW warranty and has a aftermarket warranty on it for what its worth (prob 0)
52,000 miles btw.
What are the chances of getting this repaired under warranty or the chance of any goodwill from BMW, or will it be
sorry sir that is general wear and tear.
I need to get this sorted this week one way or another.
Any advice or tips much appreciated;

In 05 a modified friction plate was introduced to the dervs as judder was a common issue...

Your warranty will more than likely not cover this as judder is classed as ear in a clutch.

You can try BMW they may help on the labour, but they have now pulled their purse string firmly tight so getting GW can be a struggle, and as BMW themselves are having a mare in these troubled times they wont give out 100% that often anymore

To be honest i havent a cle what route i am going to go down.
Either take it to BMW, £100 per hour labour, and let them strip the car down to find the fault(s) and hope to get some goodwill or not.
Take it to my local indy and take a chance that the aftermarket warranty will cover something, £30 per hour.
How many hours approx to get to the clutch / flywheel to find the exact cause?

its about 1 1/2 hours to strip down as the crow flies......

Your a bit in the devil and the deep blue there....im an indie so i will say indie as you save X amount on the overall job, but if BMW were to give goodwilll then you could save the there too.

It may be worth ringing the local stealer and asking them is it u r likely to get goodwill for this problem....they did used to give 100% but it hard to say now. Worth a punt...If they say no, you could always take it to customer services and try.

If its 05 and the mileage is good (not 200k) and the history is upto scratch you will be in with a good chance of them funding the parts and you the labour...

Devil and the blue sea sums it up perfectly.
The car has 52,ooo miles and full BMW history up to date.
How long to replace the clutch and flywheel in total?, just trying to work out the hours invloved
against taking it to an indy, but im 99% sure the aftermarket warranty wont cover the clutch outside 'wear and tear'

The book time for replacement is circa 5 hours and should easily be done in this time.

The hit will be in the cost of the clutch and flywheel themselves, unfortunatly i dont know the costs off hand.

5 hours will be £500 in labour compared to £150 at the indy's, so thats £350 saved
but then BMW may pay the costs for the parts which would be more than £350 if i pay for them myself
Guess i will just have to ring them tomorrow and see what they say regards goodwill.

Thats what Id try first, you may need to talk to customer services depending on how helpful the stealer is......And this problem you have is a known issue and is documented on the PuMA system (technical help line-dealer to BMW technical).

Of course the car decided not to shudder when the BMW tech drives it.
The vibration was in the clutch but because it was only slightly vibrating in the first inch of travel and not
the whole way through the clutch to the floor he said that was nothing to worry about.
They apparently had the same car in that very morning with the same issues and changed both the flywheel and the
clutch and the car still had the clutch vibration after that.
I guess he has no reason to lie to me as there was a possibility that i would have had to pay for it myself and he could have just said book it in and we will look at it £££££
They also would be glad of the warranty work if it came to that, as they are selling very very few cars according to him.
